CYT Waco offers classes over the course of three sessions during the school year: Fall, Winter, and Spring. Weekly classes last for two hours and run for ten consecutive weeks. A variety of classes are offered in drama, voice, dance, and specialty classes that vary per session. Most of the classes are small to ensure personal attention and growth. At the end of a CYT session, students will come away with improved skills in an area of emphasis. During the last week of class, a high-energy showcase is presented by each class to demonstrate to other students, family members, and friends what they have learned.

Enrolled students, ages 8 – 18, have the opportunity to audition for a CYT Broadway-style musical! Younger students may serve as ushers at CYT shows, and students ages 13 and up may work on a backstage crew.

Jennie Smith

Jennie is so excited to be teaching again this session! She moved to Waco from College Station in June of 2016, and is a homeschooling mother of 4. She has been performing since she was 3, all the way through college, where she studied Vocal Performance at Oral Roberts University. As an adult, she sang with the Brazos Valley Chorale, taught music at a private school, along with teaching private vocal lessons. Her passion for finding and teaching harmonies comes from her many years of leading worship in church, in addition to her performing experience. Jennie has directed and choreographed various productions at church, and brought those talents to us at CYT Waco in the Spring of 2017, when she was the Vocal Director for Seussical Jr. Last season her Artistic Team contributions were as Vocal Director and Co-Choreographer for School House Rock Live, Choreographer for Into The Woods Jr., as well as Vocal Directing our Spring show, James and the Giant Peach. She substituted & assisted in the Fall & Winter sessions, & taught our musical theatre class, Tarzan, in the Spring. This past summer she served as a counselor during Trolls Camp and Vocal Directed our Greatest Show Camp, and went on a "High Adventure" teaching the Aladdin Musical Theatre class for this fall session. She is driven by her passion to for the kids to find their character & their voice.

Jeremy Gilbert

Originally from Plano, TX, Jeremy Gilbert studied theater performance and elementary education at Baylor University, graduating with a BSEd in Elementary Education. Never leaving wonderful Wacotown after college, he now resides with his beautiful wife, Lauren, and energetic four-year-old son, Oliver, in Waco. Jeremy is an assistant principal in China Spring ISD by day, but an awesome theater teacher by night! His love for theater and performing started at the age of 5 when he became a Christian at the end of watching a church Easter pageant performance. From then on, theater and being a follower of Christ were a part of him forever! Jeremy has been in numerous plays, musicals, and other performance events over the years. His favorite roles have included Jacob Marley in A Christmas Carol and Lazar Wolf in Fiddler on the Roof! He has also directed productions involving kids, teens, college students, and adults! Jeremy has a passion for educating the next generation of performers in all aspects of the theater with a uniquely Christian viewpoint, with Christ calling us to be excellent in all we do. Jeremy’s mission is to bring glory to God and to spread the gospel of Jesus through relationships and the performing arts while having lots of fun at CYT!

Malachi Key

Malachi Key is a student at MCC aiming to transfer to Baylor to get a degree in Special Education, and eventually a PHD in Clinical Psychology. He has been working in various roles in the theatre world for about 5 years, performing with PATH Co-op in Amman Jordan, Waco Civic Theatre, and the Mjdway High Panther Players. He has performed in, directed, and written various plays over the years, but his first passion is still acting, with personal favorite performances being in “Bye Bye Birdie”, “The 39 Steps”, and “Baskerville”. Though he’s been a long time admirer of their incredible shows, this is Malachi’s first time teaching at CYT, and he’s incredibly excited to join everyone this year!

Melissa Lohr

Melissa Montgomery is a student at Baylor University currently studying curriculum and instruction. She holds her BA in Sociology and Educational Psychology. Melissa grew up in the music world with over 16 years in violin, viola, piano, and voice., Melissa is a member of Seventh and James Baptist Church here in Waco. In her first year of working with CYT, Melissa taught the Spring session of the Our Gang class as well as music in the Teen Idol camp over the summer. She is very excited to be a part of CYT and cannot wait to see how the program will grow in years to come.

Stephanie Gerath

Stephanie Gerath is the Artistic Director for CYT Waco. She has worked in both public and private educational settings for the last 8 years. She is very excited to bring her knowledge of Theater to CYT children! She brings with her many years of theatre experience including her most recent stage appearance in Waco Civic Theatre's production of "Les Miserables." She has also performed in other musicals such as "42nd Street" and "Bye Bye Birdie." She has also directed and designed many of CYT Waco's shows since "You're a Good Man Charlie Brown". She loves the technical side of theatre and has worked hard to build skills in costuming, set design, and stage makeup. Stephanie feels incredibly blessed to be on this amazing adventure with CYT.

Tara Hoover

Tara has just recently moved to Waco and is so excited to join the CYT family! She grew up in theatre around the East Texas & Dallas area. Serving in her community as actress, stage manager, assistant director, choreographer, director & Camp Coordinator for Tyler Civic Theatre & countless others. She has been awarded 2 distinctions from The London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts, Best Actress in OAP & doesn't count any of her talents for herself but for The Lord. Tara was a licensed actress for the Linicomn Agency for 3 years. This training was crucial, vulnerable & now very teachable in how the Film Industry is so different than Theatre & ways they both compliment each other. Her motto is "Theatre/Acting/The Industry is a raw & vulnerable craft... one that needs more of Jesus and less of ourselves. If I can help kids realize their potential, what God says about their gifts and how to go out and make disciples w/the talents they ALL possess? Then that's why I had all of the years of training, 50+ shows & countless 'Aha!' moments. Not for me, but to give back."

"It is aways a place where we can learn and grow in God and theatre."
