Class Description

Get ready to work your tails off in this auditioned advanced vocal class, focusing on works from Les Misérables!

This class is ideal for the advanced vocal student who is comfortable singing solos, as well as harmonies, and is looking to perfect their craft and build endurance for the purpose of carrying a lead role in a production.  We will showcase group numbers such as “Do You Hear The People Sing”, as well as more intricate vocal work such as duets and layered voices as in “One Day More”.  In addition, each student will sing a featured solo in our end of session showcase, from songs such as “I Dreamed A Dream” & “On My Own”.   We will be working on stamina, projection, balance, tone, blend, and other advanced techniques that will take immense concentration, focus & effort, which should be taken into consideration, but will definitely be well-worth the reward in the end.
I am absolutely ecstatic about this class and can not wait to get started on helping you to reach your goals!!!
Prerequisite: Upon enrolling, each student will be required to submit a 2nd class choice, as acceptance to this class is by audition, which will take place the 1st day of class. This Class choice will be turned in on the 1st night of classes to the Class Coordinator. In the event they do not make the class, they will be moved to their 2nd choice on week 2. Regarding audition materials, each student should bring a one minute excerpt from any Les Mis song, although your track does not need to be cut & uploaded as we do for show auditions. Bringing a backing track (no background vocals) on their phone or other device will be acceptable.

Jennie Smith

Jennie is so excited to be teaching again this session! She moved to Waco from College Station in June of 2016, and is a homeschooling mother of 4. She has been performing since she was 3, all the way through college, where she studied Vocal Performance at Oral Roberts University. As an adult, she sang with the Brazos Valley Chorale, taught music at a private school, along with teaching private vocal lessons. Her passion for finding and teaching harmonies comes from her many years of leading worship in church, in addition to her performing experience. Jennie has directed and choreographed various productions at church, and brought those talents to us at CYT Waco in the Spring of 2017, when she was the Vocal Director for Seussical Jr. Last season her Artistic Team contributions were as Vocal Director and Co-Choreographer for School House Rock Live, Choreographer for Into The Woods Jr., as well as Vocal Directing our Spring show, James and the Giant Peach. She substituted & assisted in the Fall & Winter sessions, & taught our musical theatre class, Tarzan, in the Spring. This past summer she served as a counselor during Trolls Camp and Vocal Directed our Greatest Show Camp, and went on a "High Adventure" teaching the Aladdin Musical Theatre class for this fall session. She is driven by her passion to for the kids to find their character & their voice.
